Commentary. From the New Urban Politics to the 'New' Metropolitan Politics

It is now almost 20 years since the idea of a New Urban Politics (henceforth NUP) was canvassed. During that time, there has been ample scope to reflect on the arguments that were made then and see how they could be developed further. There are also tricky issues of geohistorical context. The idea was developed with the American instance very much in mind so the degree to which it could be applied elsewhere was always in question. Now, as in the papers appearing in this Special Issue, there is also the question of the various ways in which, and the degrees to which, it might have been overtaken by events.
