Changing contexts in urban regeneration: 30 years of modernisation in Rotterdam

Paul Stouten's book may be read as a history of urban regeneration and renewal in the Dutch context that goes back to the slum clearances of the nineteenth century, as well as a detailed report on a case study that considers the successes and the failures of an extended urban renewal programme carried out between 1975 and the early 1990s in the Oude Noorden area in Rotterdam. In particular, this national and international 'shining example' of urban modernisation is evaluated in the light of sustainability, comparing the existing situation with that in 1975 when the major programmes began and with that in 1993 when a phase in urban renewal came to an end.
