Governing for sustainable urban development

In Governing for Sustainable Urban Development, Yvonne Rydin addresses the relationship between governing and sustainable urban development, an important research theme in contemporary urban studies, exploring the role that urban development and urban policy can play in the support of sustainable development. Based on the notion of governing as 'the purposeful effort to guide, steer, control, and manage sectors or facets of society', the aim of the book is to examine how governing can promote more sustainable urban areas, by shaping the nature of new urban developments. Although focused on the urban scale and on processes of governing at the policy layer, this book is certainly also of interest for discussions and policy formulation at the regional and national tiers. The author explores this theme and structures the entire book around a central thesis, according to which market processes alone cannot deliver a public policy goal such as sustainability, in particular due to its emphasis on environmental protection and social benefits, concluding that there is a need for the public sector, the state and local government, to break new ground in the encouragement of urban sustainable development through processes of governing, a perspective with which I'm in accord. This book has 10 chapters and is organized into three main groups of chapters or sections.
