This is an eminently readable and accessible book whose central theme is how effective governing and learning at the national and urban scales can successfully increase the chances of delivering sustainable development. It provides all of us, who basically understand the sustainability agenda, with a secure organisational framework around which to structure our knowledge. It also highlights the spatial dimension of sustainability and considers how projects that work at the micro scale do not necessarily translate well when applied to a city-scale development. Finally, it considers sustainability in its constituent parts (social, economic, environmental), describes the tensions that exist and considers how good governing and learning networks might be used to improve decision-making and deliver significantly better development.
