The rationale and tools for urban land use planning are frequently under attack from those seeking more laissez-faire approaches to development. Planning can become a dirty word in times of rapid growth as developers and others try to meet, or create, demand for housing and planning students and those who have come to planning positions from other disciplines are faced with a sometimes bewildering array of terms and processes lacking a sense of context and purpose. New South Wales (NSW), home to Australia's most globally significant city, naturally should have a great interest in urban planning. In this book, Nicole Gurran, former practicing planner with the state government and now Senior Lecturer in urban and regional planning at the University of Sydney, deliberately provides an introduction to statutory urban land use planning as a proactive, positive practice.
