Sembcorp looks to China and Malaysia for labour

SEMBCORP Marine is spending more than US$250 million to bring workers from less traditional labour markets to complete projects at its Singapore yards because of coronavirus. "To complete the existing projects with minimum further delay, the group has actively sourced for skilled workers from other countries, tapping into alternative labour supply other than the recruitment from sources the group use[d] to hire from," said chief executive Wong Weng Sun. These steps to address an acute labour shortage - while complying with the government's stringent protocols on the entry of migrant workers during the pandemic - are expected to result in increase manpower costs and related costs of S$361 million (US$265 million) over the next six to 18 months.
