A recovery in oil and gas prices, combined with improved production figures, enabled Germany's Wintershall Dea to post a rise in earnings during the second quarter. Net income for the three months to 30 June totalled €62 million ($73.1 million), rebounding strongly from last year's second-quarter net loss of €703 million. The corresponding 2020 result was affected by net impairments of €952 million, triggered by revised commodity price assumptions as well as a reserves update. Wintershall booked net impairments of only €66 million in the latest quarter, mainly relating to a reduction in its interest in Block 7 off Mexico, which contains the Zama discovery, now subject to a controversial unitisation process. Taking into account one-off impairments and costs, adjusted net income for the quarter totalled €168 million, up €81 million compared with a year ago, as revenues surged from €542 million to nearly €1.4 billion.
