New Netflix pilot keeps Alberta oil town rolling

A new show focusing on the lives of oilfield workers in Alberta, Canada may be next in a long line of riveting, gritty television drama series, at least according to its director. "It's based off reality, it's based off a lot of true stories that we learned in the industry, and obviously dramatised... lots of drama, drugs, sex, everything else that TV needs and entertains people," Edmonton-based director Raoul Bhatt told Global News. The series, Pipe Nation, will revolve around the life of a single mother working with a pipeline crew in the Alberta oil patch. The pilot, being created for Netflix, is set to be shot in the oil town of Sundre and will feature Alberta talent and local landmarks, including wells and pipelines. The pilot is giving hope to the province's film industry, which has been all but scuttled by Covid-19 lockdowns and social distancing measures. However, Sundre has been working with film non-profit Keep Alberta Rolling to create policies to attract more film and television production to the area.
