Collegiate Teams Fall Short of Elusive Fourth Mission But IARC Organizers Say Students Reached Goal of Advancing State of the Industry
Time may have run out on the collegiate teams vying for top honors at the 18th annual AUVSI International Aerial Robotics Competition (IARC), but they fulfilled the main spirit and goals of the competition, organizers say. The mission: Fly a 3-kilometer perimeter with a fully autonomous aerial robot; find a village and identify a particular building within that village; identify all of the valid openings in the building through which the aerial robot could fly or, alternately, through which it could insert an autonomous sub-vehicle in order to find a specific target within the building; and send images back to the launch point. A team completed the mission when it seamlessly demonstrated all of these behaviors in less than 15 minutes.
