For eight days, robots roamed Big Sky Country at Camp Guernsey, Wyo., as three industry teams were pitted against each other in the Robotic Range Clearance Competition (R2C2) to see which could perform the dull, dirty and dangerous task of unex-ploded ordnance range clearance.In the Grand Challenge-style event, an approximately 30-person collaborative team, comprised of Kairos Autonomi, Autonomous Solutions, Zonge International, SAIC, VKR Inc., WM Robots LLC and John Deere, took home the $1 million prize, an award that was only to be presented if a team surpassed a certain grading level by the judges, which they achieved."We really like getting in the dirt and working hard and having a good time," Mel Torrie, of Autonomous Solutions, said after the win, which was announced at AUVSI's Unmanned Systems North America 2011 conference. "We had some great help from engineers. It was great to partner with some people that had the same goals and had that don't-quit attitude."
