Although offshore oil and gas still supply some 46% .of the UK's GDP, and renewable energy sources a mere 0.02%, there is no doubting the push from the government and from the European Commission for growth and development in the renewable energy sector, starting with offshore wind but including energy from tides and waves. Other countries around the world share similar patterns and pressures. At the same time the oil business is pushing its frontiers into progressively deeper water, with all the attendant risks. Colin Summerhayes Colin Summerhayes holds a PhD from Imperial College and a DSc degree from Victoria University, NZ. He has worked in academia, government and industry (both and BP), and is a past Director of the Institute of Oceano-graphic Sciences Deacon Laboratory (Worm-ley), of UNESCO's Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) Project Office (Paris), and of ICSU's Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (Cambridge). He is now an Emeritus Associate of the Scott Polar Research Institute of Cambridge University, the current President of SUT and a Vice-President of the Geological Society of London.
