The meeting of the BTS on January 20 took place in London at the Institution of Civil Engineers and was devoted to a paper by Martin Herrenknecht of Herrenknecht International on the Fourth Elbe Road Tunnel in Hamburg. Martin Herrenknecht explained that his company had been responsible for supplying the 14.2m Mixshield used to drive the 2.7km tunnel. The machine, named 'Trude', is the largest diameter shield machine ever manufactured and has been equipped with some major technical innovations to carry out such a demanding project.
