Until recently, Singapore's MRT had a good construction record. Apart from events of sink holes and incidences of deep surface settlement atop earlier metro tunnel drives in the central district, there had been no previous events of tunnel or ground excavation collapse. There also has never been the need to demolish irreparably damaged third party property. While official investigation into the collapse of MRT's Nicoll Highway open cut tunnel excavation continues, there is little that can be said of the exact causes, T&TI contacted LTA to examine the immediate actions by LTA following the event and its possible consequences on future underground MRT excavations.
