Hong Kong's Lok Ma Chau Spurline has combined bored tunnelling with tricky cut and cover construction. Roger B Storry, geotechnical/ foundations manager and P Bouquet, project director, both of the Dragages (HK) JV describe the works. The Kowloon Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC) is constructing the 7.4km Lok Ma Chau Spurline in the northern New Territories of Hong Kong to form a second border crossing into Mainland China (figure 1). The Spurline was originally envisaged as an elevated viaduct, however, in order to protect an environmentally rich wetland area, the first 5.2km was changed to bored and cut and cover tunnel. Dragages HK Joint Venture (DJV) comprising Dragages (HK) Ltd and Bouygues Travaux Publics was commissioned by KCRC in October 2002, under the US$359M Design and Build Contract, 'LDB201 -Sheung Shui to Chau Tau Tunnels', to design and construct 3.6km of 8.75m excavated diameter (7.625m i.d.) twin bored tunnels and approximately 1.4km of cut and cover approach tunnels and ramps, together with associated structures, which form part of the Spurline. The TBM works made up for 32% of the contract cost, 42% was accounted for by the cut and cover works, whilst the remaining 26% was attributed to shafts, ventilation buildings and M&E equipment.
