Stec Launches Own Large Tbm

Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Corp (STEC) last month launched its first large diameter slurry shield to bore a tube beside the existing DaPu Road tunnel below the river Huangpo in Shanghai. The 11.22m diameter TBM will drive a tunnel approximately 3km long tunnel below the river Huangpo. Expanding the capacity of the strategic road link is important to the success of the city in hosting World Expo 2010. The TBM research and development was carried out in house by STEC under the project code "863", the company said, adding that it holds full intellectual property rights to the shield. STEC added that its work also proved that there was the production capability of manufacturing such shields with synchronised grouting capability, segment erection, slurry systems and electro-mechanical controls. The Huangpo drains northwards to the Yangtze river, its mouth close to where the location of the Pudong side of the major bridge and tunnel scheme being built over the river via Changxing and Chongming islands.
