The secretary of state for transport in the UK Lord Adonis addressed the House of Lords last month on high speed railways between London and the major cities of the Midlands, the North and Scotland.rnAdonis said, "This Y-shaped network of about 335 miles (539km) in total, with branches north of Birmingham running either side of the Pennines, would berncapable of carrying trains at up to 250mph (402km/h) and could be extended to other cities and to Scotland."
