Pforzheim in southwest Germany is better known for its rich history in the jewelry and watch making industries, but during 201 1 it achieved something entirely different. Municipal planning authority Stadtentwasserung Pforzheim, using a design by Hyder Consulting Germany, successfully installed an innovative 480m air cushioned culvert beneath the rivers Nagold and Enz as part of a new 1,1 20m sewer. The new infrastructure, which was mainly pipe jacked into position, has both increased system capacity and ensured better operational efficiency of the network.
