Great Britain Bill payers have been warned they face one-off surcharges as well as annual hikes to their water rates in order to fund the Thames Tideway Tunnel, a major new sewer that aims to help tackle the problem of overflows from the London's Victorian sewers. Around 14 million people in London and the south face an extra GBP 29 (USD 45) charge on their water bills to help pay for the sewer. The company cites the costs of land acquisition for the Thames Tideway Tunnel as well as other preparatory work required for the construction of the tunnel, as its reasons for submitted an application to the industry regulator, Ofwat, to hit customers with the one-off charge.
