A bottom-up approach to the planning of underground space

The quest for more space in big urban areas is a world-wide phenomena. It is self evident that as cities develop due to growing populations and further concentrations of business and industry, more space is required to accommodate these activities. In many publications, the fact that by 2006 more than half the world population will live in cities, is used to underline this. Although in many ways the use of underground space is beneficial to the environment and can be seen as part of a more sustainable approach to life on the surface, there is a major flaw in this top-down approach to underground space use. When considering the use of the underground, due attention must be given to what already exists below the surface in terms of life and natural resources.
