River crossing with Direct Pipe

Michels Canada completed the first installation in Canada utilising the Direct Pipe method when it completed a 1,122 ft crossing under the Beaver River. The beaver river installation is part of the Inter Pipeline Cold Lake and Polaris Expansion program, which includes installation of 560 km of underground pipeline for distribution between Edmonton and Fort McMurray. The expansion program, which was announced in July 2012, followed the signing of a binding Shipper Support Agreement for Inter Pipeline to provide bitumen blend and diluent transportation services to three major oil sands projects. Based on this agreement, Inter Pipeline began integrated expansion plans on its Cold Lake and Polaris pipeline systems at a capital cost of approximately $CAD2.1 billion.
