Utilizing horizontal directional drilling for the installation of a river crossing waterrnmain saved the Caribou Utilities District in Caribou, Maine significant permittingrnrequirements, construction time and money.rnThe Caribou Utilities District in Caribou, Maine, recently transitioned from a surfacernwater source to a new groundwater source.rnThe District retained the services of Wright-Pierce of Topsham, Maine, to design thernwells, pump station and transmission mains. A 12-inch ductile iron waterrntransmission main was used to bring water from the wells and pump station to therndistribution system, for the entire length except for a required river crossing, whichrnwas installed by horizontal directional drilling (HDD).rnThis paper will address processes by which HDD was selected as the best alternativernfor the river crossing, the permitting benefits of selecting HDD, problemsrnencountered during construction, and the lessons learned from this interesting project.
