Last year, Watercare announced plans to undertake one of New Zealand's most ambitious tunnelling projects by constructing a 13 km wastewater tunnel at depths of up to 100 m underneath the city, known as the Central Interceptor wastewater tunnel. In March 2019, Watercare signed the construction contract for the NZ$1.2 billion (AU$1.1 billion) project with a Ghella-Abergeldie Joint Venture (JV). The wastewater pipeline is a vital infrastructure project and forms part of a strategy to protect and enhance the natural environment. In addition to the Central Interceptor, Watercare has announced it will deliver other projects in the area including separating stormwater and wastewater tunnels.
