Focused Issue of Transportation Science on Freight Transportation and Logistics

Significant developments are taking place in the area of freight transportation and logistics. These developments answer economic and social challenges, as transportation and logistics systems, together with the organizations making them up or using them, aim to achieve simultaneously the highest levels of efficiency, profitability, and competitiveness, while continuously reducing their environmental footprint and contributing to improving the quality of life of the people and the harmonious development of our society. As witnessed at the recent 5th ODYSSEUS International Workshop of Freight Transportation and Logistics, which took place on May 21-25, 2012 in Mykonos, Greece, very intense and rich research efforts in operations research and transportation science are being deployed to answer these challenges.
