(9) Current Status and Issues of Freight Transport on Cross-border Corridors in East Africa

In East Africa, there are two cross-border corridors, namely, Northern Corridor and Central Corridor. Each corridor connects a seaport in coastal countries and major cities in landlocked countries. Four landlocked countries in this region enable to use either corridors for their import/export activities through coastal countries’ seaport. Hence, Northern and Central Corridors are in competitive relation each other. However, current competition status and issues of these cross-border haulage are not well analyzed yet, thus we revealed them through extensive literature reviews and interview survey with several stakeholders of freight transport in this region. We identified the major factors to select a corridor, main issues of cross-border haulage, program for regional coordination, and relationship among countries.
