Potter Logistics is forecasting rapid savings since retrofitting one of its Mercedes-Benz Actros tractor units with predictive powertrain control (PPC) transmission management. PPC is a cruise control system that uses 3D digital mapping and GPS to scan the road topography ahead. It then manages gear changes and vehicle speed. The system - which cost £1,200 to fit, including training - is already delivering fuel benefits and, says fleet manager Colin Bamford, should pay for itself in less than four months. Potter chose a two-year-old Actros 2545 with the 449bhp engine to trial the technology. The truck spends its days delivering packaged chemicals, while at night it pulls a double-deck trailer on long haul.
