MAJOR INVESTMENT REQUIRED TO ACHIEVE NET-ZERO BY 2050

Up to £14 billion worth of additional investment is needed in renewable energy infrastructure per year if the UK is to achieve net-zero by 2050, according to a report by Good Energy and the Energy Systems Catapult. By increasing its investment in renewables, the UK can reach a target of 98% of its electricity generated by a renewable source. 100GW solar and 70GW wind could make up around 84% of total electricity by 2030, states the report, Renewable Nation: Pathways to a Zero Carbon Britain. The study suggests the UK should further explore sectors such as tidal, wave and geothermal to provide up to 34GW of energy by 2050, using government funds.
