Time was when the National Association of Police Fleet Managers (NAPFM) annual conference and exhibition was, as the name suggests, a highly-specialised event of modest size. Not any more. Last month's show at Wroughton, near Swindon, Wiltshire attracted what was described accurately by Steve Botham, Wiltshire Constabulary fleet manager and NAPFM chairman as "an unrivalled display of the very latest technology in the emergency service market". The government's highly-controversial plans for police force mergers may have been called off, but that certainly does not mean that the way police fleets are being managed is the same as it ever was. Change is also the order of the day at fire and rescue services and at ambulance fleets (page 28). The NAPFM show is now established as the event that encapsulates all such developments.
