I can reinforce the observation by David Wilcox in August's Transport Engineer of an optimum speed for fuel economy - in other words negligible further gain as cruising speed is cut beyond a certain point. Exactly the same pattern emerged from the series of fuel consumption tests with a 1.7-litre Vauxhall Combo van in the June BTAC trials. It carried 380kg. The van had a Romatic road-speed governor, made by Autokontrol of Oldham. Different speed settings were tried in 10-lap, 30.5-mile, circuits of the Mira high-speed track. At 70mph it did 41.355 miles per gallon (an 11 per cent improvement over when the driver tried to keep to 70mph with the governor out of action).
