Wheel security: a tough nut to crack

Recent letters from several correspondents regarding wheelnut relaxation and wheel detachment on commercial vehicles demonstrate that it is still a very live issue.rnAs managing director of VisiLok, I was particularly interested in Don Wright's contribution (Transport Engineer May). His clear analysis of the clamping-force issues with fluid joints are very much in line with our own thinking. Don Wright makes the point that the number of mating faces, and the potential for irregularities, means that the relationship between applied torque and resultant clamping force is indeterminate. Thus loss of clamping force and subsequent nut relaxation will always be a risk.
