On 29 October 2003, NSW Transport Services Minister Michael Costa announced the introduction of new legislation to establish Sydney Ferries as a State-owned corporation independent of the State Transit Authority (STA). Sydney Ferries will become an independent operation for the first time since it was bought by the State Government in June 1951. The decision, ahead of the final reports by Prof. Parry and Mr Barrie Unsworth into their respective transport inquiries, has raised fears that the Government could be moving towards privatising public transport services.
