In showcasing itself on the world stage of the 2008 Olympic Games, the Chinese capital of Beijing is seeking to put right past transport planning wrongs. Following the reforms initiated by Deng Xiaoping in 1978,and stimulated by events such as the hosting of the 1990 Asian Games and the city's Olympic bid in 2001-2002, Beijing's city fathers sought to transform the city to reflect their images of'modernity'.
