Public Transport Plans and The Commonwealth Games

Extensive special arrangements were made to cater for patrons travelling to Commonwealth Games events in Melbourne between 15 and 26 March. A total of 28,000 additional public transport services were scheduled. A ten per cent drop in daily commuter usage because of school holidays also helped to cope with the increased patronage. Nevertheless, the period was claimed to be the busiest two weeks in Melbourne's public transport history with two million spectators using the system. This was a 20% increase in usage. Regular patrons were warned of the "unprecedented" load.
