A review of the May 2011 Melbourne Metro timetable

The formerly arcane world of train timetabling has assumed greater profile in recent years. Not long ago a new timetable might have merely inserted one or two extra peak trains into an existing schedule to relieve overcrowding. In contrast recent twice-yearly timetable revisions have introduced larger changes based on new thinking about how the network should run. Pent-up demand for extra services and the arrival of new trains and infrastructure has encouraged this innovation. Furthermore the train contracts require a 'greenfields' timetable that is hoped will increase network capacity and resilience.
