South Morang

The opening on 22 April of the new railway from Epping to South Morang involved the reconstruction of a railway opened 123 years ago and closed 53 years ago. It was authorised by the Railway Construction Act 1884, sometimes referred to as the 'Octopus Act', which sanctioned 69 new railways, the 14th of which was a line from the then proposed railway from Royal Park to Clifton Hill to the township of Whittlesea, a distance of 20.82 miles with a ruling grade of 1 in 50. It was regarded as a country line, its purpose being to open up a pastoral and agricultural district.
