May I offer some comments regarding Mr David Beres's review of our recently produced Gold Coast Public Transport Network Map, developed for TransLink? The first part of developing any new Transport Service Map is to decide what the objectives of the Map will be. These Objectives can take many forms but in this instance the primary objective was: A) to show the entire Gold Coast network on one map that would be readable when printed out in A4 size; and the secondary objective was: B) to show each route in terms of the suburbs and facilities they serve, relative to other routes in the network and the city as a whole. To achieve both of these objectives, scale and clarity would be the main challenges. It was decided early on in the development process that more detailed maps of the Gold Coast would be required to show both the individual street names being utilised by individual routes, and the locations of bus stops, in effect dividing the city into six separate sheets. It would be at this more detailed scale that customers would then be able to plan the specific elements of their journey at an individual street or bus stop level.
