The American Public Transportation Association reported on 9 March that US ridership on public transportation systems reached 10.8b trips in 2014, the highest annual ridership in 58 years. Some transit agencies experienced all time record high ridership in 2014. This record ridership did not just happen in large cities, it also happened in small and medium size communities. Light rail ridership climbed 3.6% in 2014 compared with 2013, with 16 out of 28 public transit systems reporting increases. Light-rail service in Minneapolis jumped 57.4% because of the opening of the Metro Green Line in that city. Light-rail ridership in Oceanside, California soared 36% because of the system being shut down for several months in 2013. Four light rail systems saw double digit increases in 2014: Houston 17.9%; San Diego 15.3%; Denver 12% and Seattle, Sound Transit, 11.7%. Ridership on heavy rail systems rose 3.3% across the country, with eight out of 15 systems reporting increases. Those posting gains included: San Francisco 6.1%; Boston 4.9%; Chicago 4.1%; New York's MTA New York City Transit 4%; New York's MTA Staten Island Railway 3.5%; Atlanta 2.3% and Miami 2.1%. Nationally, commuter rail ridership climbed 2.9% as 22 out of 28 transit systems reported increases. Four commuter-rail systems saw double-digit growth: Salt Lake City 16.2%; Stockton, California 15.7%; Seattle Sound Transit 10.4%, and San Carlos, California 10.1%.
