The Newcastle branch just prior to closure

Kevin Eadie took these photographs from the observation tower at Queen's Wharf on 14 December 2014, with the top one looking towards Newcastle Station and the lower one looking towards Civic Station. By the 1930s the Newcastle CBD was probably the most built up of the Australia regional cities, and the population figures at the time would probably support this. Continuation of this growth was probably stopped by the post war arrival of the motor vehicle age and the development of regional shopping centres. Recent building has added much to the depth of the CBD, but much has been left unused such as the police station/post office group of buildings in Hunter Street in the same block as the station Of interest in the photograph of the station is the V set in Platform 3 as opposed to the more usual Platform 1.
