DINGHY SURGE RESPONSE TO ROLLING MANEUVER FOR AERODYNAMIC ANALYSIS

An estimation of the surge response transfer function of an FJ dinghy due to roll tack maneuvers was determined to aid in computing transient aerodynamic lift and drag forces. Measurements of accelerations were measured by performing a series of maneuvers simulating racing conditions on the Charles River in 1.3±0.3 m/s wind velocity. Through a variety of analysis techniques, an estimate for the transfer functions between the roll and surge was approximated as a forth order linear system. Linear simulation demonstrates an accurate fit, with a Normalized-RMSE of 0.076 over the primary response region. Furthermore, the transfer function agrees with the dominant response frequencies found through Fourier analysis of 0.195±0.096 Hz and 0.879±0.096 Hz. The results may be used in the future to determine transient aerodynamic force effects.
