The effects of forward speed and optional plow attachments on draft and soil manipulation caused by a moldboard plow in Eniwa volcanic ash soils were studied using an open air soil bin. Soil moisture content was maintained at 36% (dry basis) while forward speeds ranged from 1.0 to 4.0 m/s. The effects of optional coverboard and plow extension attachments were studied. The results indicated that draft increased with increases in travel speed but that the rate of change differed with speed levels. Within the practical and economical tillage operations speed range, however, the assumption of a linearly increasing speed-draft relationship seemed to be quite valid. Increases in speed and the use of a coverboard and a plow extension resulted in more soil pulverization.
