Integrated Safety Management Principles in Construction of the Tritium Extraction Facility

In an effort to eliminate safety issues in its nuclear facilities, the Department of Energy (DOE) developed an Integrated Safety Management System (ISMS) program in the late 1990's. While the ISMS program was initially envisioned for use in operating facilities, the principles also worked well in the design, construction and commissioning of new facilities. One of DOE's newest construction projects is the Tritium Extraction Facility (TEF) at the Savannah River Site in Aiken, SC. The TEF is 75% complete and will begin nuclear operations in early 2007. It was one of the first of the new DOE facilities to be built under the ISMS program.
