Thermal reactors, LWRs and later VHTRs, are expected to dominate the 21st century nuclear power options. As a result, near-term deployable waste management and minimization options have to rely on incineration strategies involving thermal spectrum systems, for example, very efficient deep burn strategies, or potential binary configurations involving thermal spectrum deep-burn systems augmented by small dedicated fast spectrum facilities. Minimization or elimination (cleanup) of high level waste (HLW) inventories (transuranics (TRUs) and long-lived fission products (FP)) is an essential component of publicly-acceptable sustainable nuclear energy strategies.
