Brighter Prospects for Nuclear Medicine Practice in Chile

Chile has two research reactors: RECH-1 (5 MW pool-type, commissioned in 1974) and RECH-2 (10 MW pool-type, commissioned in 1977). Both were intended primarily to support the development of nuclear power in Chile, but both were also provided with an extensive range of facilities for production of radioisotopes to be used in medicine and industry. As in many other countries, the nuclear power program foreseen in the 1970s did not materialize, the research programs for which the reactors were built were not required and both research reactors have remained underutilized for essentially all of their operating lives.
