In recent years, there has been renewed interest in "life extension" for light-water nuclear power reactors (LWRs) to 60, 80/ or even 100 years. Degradation of materials comprising structural components in LWRs (such as the reactor pressure vessel and primary piping) is expected to be the limiting factor for safe operation during extended life. Therefore, a need exists for both assessing the condition of LWR structural components and estimating their remaining useful life (RUL). A range of advanced diagnostics and prognostics methods that are suitable for on-line, continuous, in-plant monitoring over extended time periods (months to years) are necessary [1].
