Status Update on U.S. DOE Accident Tolerant Fuel Development

The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy (DOE-NE), in collaboration with the nuclear industry, has been conducting research and development (R&D) activities on advanced Light Water Reactor (LWR) fuels for the last few years. Prior to the unfortunate events at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant in Japan in March 2011, the emphasis for these activities was on improving nuclear fuel performance in terms of increased burnup for waste minimization and increased power density for power upgrades, as well as collaborating with industry on fuel reliability.
