Social Engineering: A Cybersecurity Threat

Recently, hackers from foreign nations have been particularly interested in data regarding the nation's critical infrastructure which the nuclear industry is a vital component of, so those in the industry need to be especially watchful. From every indication the ongoing attacks on cyber systems will continue into the near future and increasingly sophisticated techniques will be used by hackers seeking access to important data. Properly configured hard and software can go a long way in preventing these attacks, but humans are the weak link in the defense. In the nuclear industry it is recognized that 'human performance errors' occur despite best efforts to prevent them. However, there is also recognition that with intensive training and by creating and maintaining the proper 'culture', many of those errors can be prevented. With appropriate awareness training, those with malicious intent can be thwarted in their efforts to breach the digital systems in all industries.
