A European Space Agency research and development program into the production of americium oxide-based radioisotope power systems for spacecraft is underway. The extensive program addresses numerous aspects including research into the fuel form, its processing into pellets and the technologies that will convert the radiogenic heat into usable electrical power e.g. low Watt radioisotope thermoelectric generators.
