Purpose - The paper seeks to describe National Grid's award-winning apprenticeship training programmes, which have equipped hundreds of employees with the skills they need to succeed in the power transmission and gas-distribution industry. Design/methodology/approach - The paper explains the reasons for the development of the courses, the form they take and the results they have achieved. Findings - Each learner achieves a core level of qualifications, including key skills, within the first 12 months, and a national level three qualification, together with a role-specific National Vocational Qualification and specialist business skills. Practical implications - The paper explains that the courses aim to develop trainees holistically, developing their character, behaviour, team-working and technical skills. Social implications - It is highlighted how the apprenticeships were designed in close collaboration with business operations to make them as relevant as possible to the world of work.
