External inspectors have awarded National Grid the top grade in all categories of its apprenticeship training programmes, which have equipped hundreds of employees with the skills they need to succeed in the power transmission and gas-distribution industry. The company has been running its three-year apprenticeships since 1994. It updated them ten years later, when the gas and electricity businesses of what is now National Grid came together. Taking the best of both worlds, it created the Grow Our Own strategy, developing nine apprenticeships as part of its Technical Talent Pathways portfolio. "In 2004 following an analysis of external market drivers and likely future skill shortages, the disparity between education output and future business needs and the age profile of our employees, we embarked on a robust technical-training resourcing strategy to retain competitive advantage in our increasingly changing industry, said Will Large, technical-programmes manager, UK Technical Learning and Development, National Grid. "Complementing the resourcing strategy was the drive to develop core-value behaviours in future leaders at all levels of the organization."
