A common criticism of the four-step model paradigm-that it takes land-use inputs as a given without reflecting the effects of transport accessibility on the type and location of development-is being addressed by a growing number of integrated land-use and transportation model systems. The key improvement of these models is that they allow land-use to be affected by changes in travel accessibility reflected by the transportation model, instead of assuming that land-use will remain fixed regardless of transportation system changes. Most of these model systems iterate a land-use model with a four-step travel demand model, but there are now a few examples of integrated models that utilize a tour or activity-based modelling approach for transport, including the Oregon Statewide Model (SWIM), the Ohio Statewide Model, and the Sacramento travel demand model. Linking an activity-based (AB) travel model with a land-use/economic model provides a number of potential advantages over a stand-alone transport model. The Sacramento model, for example, operates at a grid-cell level; land-use is tracked at this level, and the transport model operates with individual travellers choosing grid-cell locations for activities.
