Current Status and Future of Air Bag

The air bag augments the primary protection provided to the occupant by the seat belt in head-on collisions, reducing the possibility of head and chest impact against the steering wheel or instrument panel. The module layout, bag shape and folding method have been evolved and changed over the years resulting in different deployment pattern and characteristics which can enhance operator. Various smart air bag systems are being considered for future use. One is a system in which passenger air bag inflation is prevented when the passenger seat is not occupied or when a child seat is mounted facing rearward in the passenger seat. The other is a system in which inflator output is varied according to impact severity and occupant status. It is also envisaged that additional air bags will be installed at various places in a vehicle, for optimal protection of the occupant.
